As a therapist I have noted five areas our children have difficulty managing:
1. FLEXIBILITY- Many children today have poor flexibility in the hamstrings, calf, hips, lower and middle spine. This affects their posture and can interfere with handwriting and attention at school. In later age it can contribute to the development of kyphosis and curvature in the spine seen in the elderly today.
2. HEART HEALTH - Children today are computer fanatics and Nintendo scientists. Physical exercise and cardio health are not as developed as they once were. Children's endurance, speed, and coordination are delayed because of too much sitting down activities. This may result in cardiac dysfunctions as an adult.
3. “I CAN'T ATTITUDE” - This is a giant problem of nowadays children. More and more often children just look at activities and assume that the tasks will be too difficult to do before attempting to do them. Giving up and not even trying are characteristics that will follow your children as they age. This attitude can impact on their job advancement and even their job selection as an adult.
4. ANGER MANAGEMENT - Controlling ones temper seems to be more difficult then ever. Impulse control is more difficult then lashing out at one another. Children are not permitted to hit and do not have appropriate skills to deal with adversity.
5. OBESITY - Lack of exercise, fast foods, poor knowledge of balanced diets all contribute to obesity. Poor self esteem and lack of confidence are the immediate results followed by heart disease, diabetes, and joint stress as future results.
